Three thousand years before the rest of the saga begins, Titans still walk the world openly. Some are feared. Some are respected. One of them has withdrawn to the island of Myrn, calls himself King of the Titans, and weeps day and night where anyone can hear him. King Merin the Second has just crushed a rebellion that ran for decades, and he will not tolerate a second crown. So he summons his bannerman, Lord Quinn, and hands him an errand dressed up as an honour: bring the weeping Titan to the throne room in person. Diplomacy first. No bounty hunters. No martyrs. The road runs west into Dragonhead, a scorched country every child is warned never to enter, and it runs past a Titan who volunteers to guide five battalions to exactly where they say they want to go.
